How to Work Smarter Instead of Harder

"What we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
Smart or Hard?
Hard work is important. Those who work hard and are consistent with their work are much more likely to achieve the things that they want.
However, working hard doesn't necessarily mean that the work you are producing is of value and good quality. Other times working too hard may cause stress that leads to producing work that is of lower quality.
I believe that we must put more emphasis on working smarter. Let's look at 5 ways on How to Work Smarter Instead of Harder.
Time. The first thing that you should be aware of is how you spend your time working. It's a good idea to make a plan of what you will be working on, how you will carry out your work and also to decide how long you need to spend working on each task. This way you will learn how to use your time in a smart way so that you can reduce your working hours while being more productive.
Standards. Having standards are different that having goals. Standards mean that you have to obey to them because that is how your mind is conditioned. Setting higher standards mean that you are conditioning your mind to achieve things that you haven't achieved before.
Reflect. A great way to monitor your work is to reflect on the goals that you have achieved and the ones that you fell short on. This way you can understand what works and what doesn't, so next time you can set new goals applying the things that do work.
Distractions. Staying away from distractions will keep you focused while you are working. The main distractions to be aware of are smartphones, emails, social media and music. While working avoid these unless they are necessary in your work. Working without distractions is a great way to work smart and have more time in your day to do other things.
Downtime. Lastly, it is important to know that you shouldn't work for long periods without giving yourself breaks. A nice routine is to work for 45 minutes with 10 minute breaks in-between. Furthermore, you should leave yourself time in the day to be enjoying the things you like to do and spending time with family and friends, after all that is more important than your work.
Remember to work smart alongside working hard. Use your time effectively and plan out your days. Create standards to achieve greater things. Reflect on your goals to find out what is working for you. Avoid distractions that use up your time and prevent you from working smart. And leave room for breaks to enjoy the things that you like to do.
Now that you've understood what it means to make better use of your time, you can apply this in any area of your life including your business.

How To Stay Alert And Aware As An Entrepreneur

What makes a successful entrepreneur? Of course, the answer to that is many different things but one of them is definitely their ability to know what is going on within their own industry, within the world of business in general and especially with entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship.
Successful business owners keep up on what is going on and stay informed of the latest trends, market shifts and opportunities so that they can take any advantage they can get to make their business grow. So, how they stay in the loop so successfully?
#1 Successful Entrepreneurs Talk to Other Entrepreneurs
People there in business for themselves don't exist in a vacuum. Besides their customers, suppliers and all of the other support systems that they have around their business, they also have friends and colleagues that are also entrepreneurs and keeping up with these people is one of the best ways that they have a staying informed.
Whatever the virtual water cooler happens to be of these entrepreneurs - usually a forum or social media network - they share information, give advice and keep each other updated about entrepreneurship.
#2 Successful Entrepreneurs Read (A Lot!)
One thing that you will notice about those successful in the business world is they tend to read publications, websites or even social media posts about their business - and that includes books by some of the most successful motivational authors.
The successful people like to stay informed and they like to learn new things. There is so much information on the Internet that you could spend decades learning about a subject and still not know everything about it and being as informed as possible is equal to being as successful as possible.
#3 Successful Entrepreneurs Use The Insider Intel To Improve Their Business
All this information that they gather isn't just going to sit stagnant, either. They are going to use this information to improve their business, increase their revenue or bring in more customers. Successful entrepreneurs know when they learned something useful and work to implement it as quickly as possible.
#4 Successful Entrepreneurs Help Others Succeed Too
Another thing that you'll see is that the more successful entrepreneurs they become, the more willing they are to help other people succeed at the same time. They have been where the budding entrepreneurs currently are and remember what it was like to enter the fray with only the basics. Most successful entrepreneurs are more than willing to share their knowledge and mentor the newbies.

How Do I Patent My Mobile App Idea?

So, you have come up with a great mobile app idea and you want to protect your idea with a patent. What do you need to know? First, you need to know that applying for a patent is a very detailed, often tedious process. However, you can make it easier by knowing some key things about the patenting process. When entrepreneurs ask me how to patent a mobile app idea, this is what I tell them:
1. Do a Patent Search or App Idea Search.
This is the very first thing you should do. Often, a simple Google search will tell you if a similar app already exists. If you can find an app with features and functions like yours in the App Store, then your chances of getting a patent will be grim. You should also search the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO.gov) website to see if a patent already exists. You should search using different keywords and descriptions to make sure nothing closely similar to your idea exists. If you don't find anything similar, then you are in a good place to apply for a patent. If you find something that is somewhat close to your app idea, you may need to change your idea to make it unique. You can hire a patent lawyer to do a search for you. They don't charge too much for searching, but you can usually do as good or a better job yourself. Google, App Stores and USPTO are good sources to search when you apply for a patent, because the patent office will also search into these databases to find a match.
2. Create Design Documentation for Your App Idea
Once you find that no similar app idea exists, you will need to document your idea. Essentially, that means you need to describe the design, features and functions of your app in a document with your patent application. Your app's documentation will precisely describe what is unique about your app. You should also create wire-frames and flow charts for your application. Wire-frames can show what your app screen's may look like in terms of data, flow and features. You can also create a flow diagram to describe key flow and usage of your application. If you are not capable of doing this yourself, you can hire an app design or app development company to do it for you. You can also hire a UI/UX designer to create more advanced design documentation. This will often in PDF format.
3. File for a Provisional Patent
Once you have assembled your documentation, you should file for a provisional patent, which is easier to file (you can do it yourself right on the USPTO.gov website. You won't have to hire an expensive patent lawyer to do this. You'll just need to pay the $65 online application fee to do it. Once you send the application online, you will get a provisional, one-year patent, during which you can convert your idea into a reality.
4. Convert Provisional Patent into Non-provisional Patent
If during your one year of provisional patent coverage, you decide that your idea will success, you will want to apply for a non-provisional patent. This process may more tedious than the provisional patent process, however, you can find all the information you will need on the USPTO website. You may, at this point, want to hire a patent lawyer to file your patent application for you, especially if you have seen some success with your app in the market. If success appears likely, you may want to hire a professional to make sure your application goes smoothly.
Applying for a patent is long, detailed process, but if you follow the well-detailed steps in the process, you will be able to decrease the costs. The USPTO has made its website very simple and easy to navigate. You can even contact them if you have any questions about the process.

Skills Needed As An Entrepreneur

Polishing your skills as an entrepreneur can help you be a better entrepreneur. Here are the skills every successful entrepreneur has in common:
Doggedness.
The ability to be persistent in time of trial. Not every business will achieve that immediate success. The determination, knowing how to handle the ups and down is vital. Success does not happen overnight, some of those successful entrepreneurs out there failed again and again before finally achieving that remarkable success. Winston Churchill said: "success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm". What you need to know is that failure isn't the end but a step closer to achieving that success. This skill enables the entrepreneur to keep going when the outlook is bleak.
Stay Focused.
You have to be ready to give it all it takes, when success in the business is your priority, you will find yourself ready to tackle any kind of challenges along the way. After setting a goal, knowing how to "laser focus" on the very next step to get closer to the ultimate goal. There are so many distracting forces when trying to build a business that this skill is not easy to master.
Productivity.
This is a sensitive topic, the fact is there is no one right way to be productive that works for everybody. Learn about your peak energy times, your routines, and the productivity tools that work for you in order to create your own plan for success.
Sales.
Some entrepreneurs get stuck here, every entrepreneur is a sales person whether they want to be or not. They are either selling their ideas, products or services to customers, investors or employees. They work to be there when customers are ready to buy. Alternately, they know how to let go and move on when they are not. If you're always nervous about selling, try enrolling in a sales workshop to learn this much needed skill.
The ability to manage people.
You need to know how to manage people well. Early on in your business, you will be everyone's manager, so it pays to be effective. Entrepreneurs should know how to motivate and encourage the employees. Only by learning to leverage employees, vendors and other resources will an entrepreneur build a scalable company. They need to learn to network to meet the right people. Entrepreneurs strive to guarantee they will get honest and timely feedback from all these sources.
Adapting to change.
Change they say is constant! Successful entrepreneurs realize they don't know everything and the market is constantly changing. You have to be willing to go with the trend or change. You know what brilliant entrepreneurs does? They stay up to date on new systems, technology, and industry trends.
Strategy implementation.
You need to dedicate your time to simply dreaming about what you want for your business. Where would you like to take it? What's your vision for it? Now, how can you get there from here? Set your goals, and then develop an actionable plan to make them a reality. Then, don't forget about those goals. Keep them at the front and center to everything you do.
Take your time.
You don't need to rush things. Most entrepreneurs are not patient; they sometimes focus only on what comes next, rather than where the company needs to go. Overnight success may take 5 years or more. Entrepreneurs need to stop, pause and plan again at several intervals. Take a step at a time!
Don't be discouraged, you can learn some of these skills. Your eventual success depends on it.
See you at the top!

5 Tips for Creating a Profitable Business Idea

Recent studies and surveys reveal that there's never been a better time to be an entrepreneur. But for some reason though, most people presume starting a new business is a mysterious and a rather risky process. Although they might want to start a business, they fail to take the leap in fear of the risks involved. Honestly, treading on a new territory is only risky as long as it remains unknown; for once you know what you're up to, you 'll also know the ways to master your way around. While the estimates might vary by a small margin, on an average; nearly 600,000 start-up businesses are initiated each year in Canada and the United States alone. However, for every individual who conquers the initial resistance to actually start a business, there are a million others who vow to start their dream business but fail to do so for the lack of conviction and a profitable business idea.
So, how do you land up with a brilliant idea for your business anyway?
Blend in the right juice!
Brainstorm on your strengths.
Brainstorm on your strengths; the reasons you want to start up a business in the first place. The key to a successful business lies in its originality and personal touch. Therefore, it's important you identify your inherent calling. Now, your list might include "I love meeting people, I love playing with numbers, I am a computer geek, I am passionate about great food, I love kids, I am connected to a social cause, I am good with marketing concepts, or I thrive under pressure and perform best when tested". Whatever your strengths might be, simply document everything that flows through your mind.
Take notes.
Next, write down the things you think you need help with. For instance; you are great at your job but don't have the PR skills to market yourself well. You could therefore do well with a PR who'd make you visible and noticed. Understand that there might be people who think like you and therefore are in the lookout for a good PR to market their skills. On the other hand, there could be several other people who are probably just the opposite of you; so they might be great with their PR and communication skills but do not have the technical skills to talk about a product or service as such.
The Market trend.
Now, you might also want to think about the current trend in the market too. List down 5 products and services that you think would make your life easier; make you more productive, efficient and happier in general. This list can range from your personal to your professional life. In the end, you want to identify the top 5 factors that you think could make a world of difference to your overall way of life.
Strengths & Weaknesses | Opportunities & Threats.
Analyze all your strengths and weaknesses along with your driving factors to start a business in the first place. Find a common thread and understand the role it plays in the current scheme of events. How effectively do you think it can utilize your strengths and elevate your pitch in the marketplace? If you think you've got the perfect blend of a cocktail and can back your strengths to serve it well; you've got yourself a game-changing business idea for sure!
Gauge the current worth of your product or service.
No matter how niche or unique your idea is; it can only transform and translate into numbers and profits when you enough and more people willing to endorse and pay for it. Determine who your target consumers are. Recognize who your competitors are while gauging their products, services and presence in the market. Use surveys, promotions and consumer feedback to gauge the current market trend and your space in the marketplace.

What You're Doing Wrong As An Entrepreneur Or In Your Small Business

Business owners and entrepreneurs are not always good at asking for help. Be honest, when did you last reach out to someone? Perhaps this is the reason why they are entrepreneurs in the first place. Business owners are self motivated and self reliant. But if you're operating a business in this way, it could be the one thing which stands in the way of progress.
Entrepreneurs are hard workers too and will work hard in areas which many people wouldn't consider. They look forward to the long term effects of their actions rather than for immediate rewards. Often business owners have built up their businesses over many years of difficulties and sacrifice.
However, thinking into the cause and effects of all this work there is one thing in common: you. As the 'owner' of a business it can be easy to become complacent. Perhaps business growth isn't what it should be? You are always the limiting factor in your life. Unless you are growing, your business isn't.
If you keep operating from the belief that you know everything, you will always keep getting the same results in your business, and in your life. Growing in awareness and developing your self along with your business is what smart entrepreneurs do.
Working Hard And Smart
It can be easy to run things 'as you've always run things'. You can get stuck in a mode of operation, especially if you're largely on your own. But working hard and working smart are not the same things. You need to get smart about working hard if you are to make any progress. Don't become a 'busy fool' doing those things which you have always done, just because it's always been that way.
Smart business owners know this, and work hard at learning what the best activities are to move their business forward. This 'trap' of working as a 'technician' in the role of an entrepreneur is easy to fall into. This is especially true if you have recently 'graduated' from a role as an employee to that of an 'owner'.
The role of an employee is to listen to your boss and do the best for them. You are paid by the hour, or for work done. An owner on the other hand isn't paid for their time. They get paid when the business makes a profit. As such this is an entirely different role. Ask yourself whether you are playing a 'technician' role in your business. Should you be doing things differently? Can someone else be employed to do what you are doing? If so the answer should seem obvious. Your role should be the 'driving engine' of the business, the overseer and the planner.
Smart Advertising
Advertising is the 'engine' of your business. If cash is the 'life blood' of your business, advertising is the heart beat. Without a successful and progressive advertising campaign, your business will at best stand still. If you're standing still while other competing businesses move forward, you're effectively moving backwards.
Today we are lucky to have the internet as a source of advertising. We can reach anyone globally and target them down to their preferences, intent and geographical location. Platforms like Google's AdWords and Facebook advertising let us 'follow' our potential customers around the internet. Should someone land on our website and not purchase, we can remind them of our business later on. The advertising available to business owners today is very clever, and we should definitely be capitalizing on it.
Pay Per Click Advertising
Pay per click advertising is one of the best things to come out of the internet for business owners. Many owners doubt the effectiveness of pay per click advertising, but this is only because they don't understand it properly, or it's potential to massively change their business.
Initially pay per click should be tested and measured. Only by testing and measuring each element of an advertising campaign can you effectively 'tweek' it and learn which elements work best for your customers. If you run a campaign but don't measure it, how can you know if it brought you any customers?
The ROI
Knowing the return on investment (ROI) of any advertising campaign is a game changer. Many owners get this wrong because they only look at the initial sale. But once you can effectively determine the long term return on investment, you will start to see why it is so important to use paid advertising.
Paid advertising is effectively buying new customers. If your business model lets you earn again and again from each customer, your long term gain from a loyal customer is far more than you might spend to attain that customer. By altering your paid for advertising to reduce your cost and increase your ROI over time, you can find yourself in the nice position of being able to scale up.
Working Against Yourself
We are predisposed to think that spending is wasteful. In terms of 'smart' advertising the opposite is true. Of course you don't start out by spending huge amounts on your pay per click campaign. You start small and only increase your budget when you see tangible results and profitable ones at that.
But the main sticking point is the contrasting viewpoint that we need to 'cut back' while at the same time wanting to expand our businesses. This is a contradiction and although this is based in safety and reasonableness, your long term goal should be to be spending more and more on advertising as your business grows.
How do you feel about that? Most likely you want to spend less and less over the course of time. However, with pay per click advertising, once you have developed your adverts to pay out double what you put in, the only reasonable decision is to increase the budget.
So initially you might tentatively spend some money on advertising, see some results and then stop your adverts. This is especially true if you don't see any tangible benefit of advertising. Most people will give up too early.
Start small with a budget you can afford to lose. Test your adverts with several different strategies, keywords, images and landing pages. By cross testing adverts you can more effectively determine which ones work the best.
Once you have done this for long enough, you will see the power of pay per click. This puts you in charge of your business. Once you have one profitable campaign set up, you can simply leave it running. Then you can move on to another one and another one. This of course takes time but this strategy puts you in the driving seat of your business and eventually will mean you can grow your business more effectively.
This is smart work. This should be the focus of your time if you intend to grow your business.
Relying on free advertising methods or 'word of mouth' advertising doesn't put you in control, however valuable those methods might be.
Being a 'technician' in your business should be the work of a manager or an employee, not the business owner. As an owner, your job is to grow your business.
