How Are Startups Changing the World: Big Impacts and New Ideas

Ditching the millennial business theories and trendifying the business set ups, the modern world start-ups have brought a fresh edge and positive vibe in the business world. In the fast paced economies facing plethora of changes and cut- throat competition, start-ups have paved their way to survive, strive and succeed in the dynamic and ever growing business world.

Tracing them back, if we look at the origin of startups, we find that the term "start-up" meaning "upstart" dates back to 1550. Now, in the sense of "budding company", it was first used by Forbes magazine in the year 1976. There is as such no particular example of the first startup of the world. If you look back, any company, when it was in its initial phase, can be called as a startup.
Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Addidas, Starbucks, etc. are all the companies which are major players in the market today but then, they too, at some point of time, were just beginners or to be more precise, startups.

Is your idea diverse, relevant & productive?

The major companies have an option to cherry pick a few employees from a diverse set, whereas a startup has diverse options to pick up and work upon.
The work doesn't demand some exceptionally brilliant skills or very high acumen, all it requires is an idea. An idea, that is diverse, relevant and productive. Diverse in terms of the thought, relevant in terms of its applicability and productive in terms of its outcome. What follows next is an ideation process and implementation of the ideas.

Impressed by the productivity and fresh outlook of these companies, the government of India has decided to nurture the upcoming talent. To revolutionaries the process, a new initiative called startup India has been started by the government which focuses entirely on these startups. The website talks about the eligibility about classifying businesses as startups, eligibility for Startup Loans and other services being provided by the government (further details can be found on http://startupindia.gov.in/).

Leading the course

As Albert Camus writes, "Real generosity towards the future, consists in giving all to what is in present."

Startups use this very principle to make sure they succeed well in their objectives and come up with positive results. The job of leadership today is not only to make money but also to make meaning, and startups these days are more inclined towards making their objective, their idea a success initially and later consider the monetary aspect.

One of the major reasons behind the success of these budding companies is the fact that they very smartly combine the "wisdom" of "great philosophers" from around the globe and apply that aptly in their businesses, setting benchmarks, and thus raising the standards for others.
Another thing is, most of the startups today are successful because they used the right opportunity, to put it better, market opportunity, and played their best shot which led them to their success. Management of finance and right estimation of risks are the 2 basics that need to be kept in mind before venturing into the business.

The real example

Let's take the example of Reliance Industries Limited, a major player in the market with its business spread over different industries creating value and money simultaneously. The flagship company, Reliance Industries Limited, is a Fortune Global 500 company and is the largest private sector company in India. Dhirubhai Ambani founded Reliance as a textile company and led its evolution as a global leader in the materials and energy value chain businesses.

Let's conclude

"Be the change that you want to see", as Mahatma Gandhi said, applies to these star-ups. To conclude, these startups are the modern world eyes, that behold the beneficial virtues of the future.

How the Economy Will Impact Your Medical Staffing Business

You don't require any special knowledge, neither is it rocket science to know that you can't succeed in any business venture when the economic tides are against you, just the way it is today.
Most fortune 500 companies usually have economic guidance. As for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), they usually require the services of an economic analyst or a financial expert to aid in business growth.
Invariably, it doesn't mean a booming economy is a sure guarantee for business success and vice versa. It requires foresight and a visionary leader to ride the storm and stand tall.
In this article, I would highlight three important points you need to know about the economy today, they are;
1. We are currently in unknown territory and the usual boom - burst cycle is over. The economy is experiencing a slow growth process, and the probability of witnessing another shock is quite high, this is due to the fact that government no longer functions as optimally as it used to.
The examples are all around for us to see, from the Economic Cliff, to the Sequester, and the defaulting on National debt, these have created uncertainty that doesn't favor making business decisions. My advice would be for one to develop alternative methods to deal with opportunities or potential pit falls that may affect one's business immediately.
2. In order to gain a sizeable chunk of the market and also retain your clientele, you need to stay on top of your game. The competition is also feeling the pressure in the same way you are. So it's safe to assume they are thinking of ways to do things differently so as not to be left behind. In other for you not to be stagnant, you need to implement some of the following economic methods.
- Research markets that are immune to recession and go into business with those you think will survive.
- Provide services at price that would provide optimal value for clients.
- Develop special relationships so as to be a household name, and provide quality services to regular discounts.
- Venture into rising businesses. This way the only way you move is forward.
- Create value. This changes the perception from a cost driven business to profit driven.
- Make yourself irreplaceable to your clientele.
3. There are business environments that react in an unconventional way to economic change. These business models find ways to limit risk while demand premium fees for their services thereby making huge profits in return.
An example could be found in a company operating in a small market where the competition was leaving faster than the market was tumbling, they gained market share, raised prices and made a fortune. Another opportunity was found in a market no one ventured in because of a high risk of failure.
Any venture has risks and the medical staffing industry is no different. But, lowering the risks and understanding the industry and the economy certainly help in the success of your business. Having the right tools and the right guidance in today's economy is critical to your success.

How to Assess the Impact of a Decision

Overcoming the decision-making plight is a three-step process:
  1. Define the time frame - Setting a clear timeline and forcing yourself to take action within those set boundaries will help keep you from further procrastination.
  2. Gather information - If you feel that you are not knowledgeable on the topic, gather additional information from an expert or another team member. This will allow you to understand the details of the situation and feel more confident in making a decision. Be sure that you have distinguished between the facts and opinions though, when you process the new information.
  3. Assess the impact - Identifying the possible outcomes and their impact will help you make the right decision.
So how do you assess the impact?
While you may be inclined to rely on past scenarios to give you a slightly better handle on what to expect or what action to take, keep in mind that no two situations are the same. Because the circumstances and nuances of each case are different, do not let a previous decision be the template for all of your future actions. Instead, let it serve as a learning tool and take new, different decisions as you see fit.
While there is no clear-cut method, here are some steps that may help you narrow down your choices:
  • First, create a list of all possible outcomes.
  • Rank all the scenarios, from the best to the worst.
  • Figure out what actions will result in which outcomes
For each of these outcomes, think about all the other variables that are in play. Is there anything in particular that you can do that will reduce the likelihood of the bad or increase the good?
Also, do not forget to consider people's emotions. If this decision will impact your employees as well, take the time to view the situations from their perspective. You do not want to take an action that although will benefit you, will isolate your employees. Weigh these pros and cons in your list of possible outcomes.
As you follow these steps, you should be able to eliminate more options and start to feel more comfortable making a decision.
When should you consider hiring a business coach?
If each and every time you have to make a decision, you find yourself procrastinating or overwhelmed, it may be a sign of a bigger problem. It is common to feel nervous or hesitant once in a while, but as a leader, you cannot constantly put off making a decision or avoid the situation all together. A business coach can work with you to understand where your fears stem from and help you overcome them.
